Volunteer Job Descriptions

Foster Home Volunteer

Foster homes are a rescue's greatest asset! Open your home and your heart to some homeless rats that need a place to stay until they get adopted. Food, bedding, cage, and supplies (when applicable) provided along with the rats! This position requires a minimum commitment of 1 hour per day to socialize, feed, handle, and care for the rats in your own home.

Foster homes should be available to either attend or drop foster rats off at their closest monthly Adoption Fair. If your fosters are sick, medical care will be provided by Rattie Ratz.

Adoption Volunteer

Help with our monthly adoption events by talking to prospective adopters, helping with paperwork, and making good matches between our animals and potential adopters. Training will be provided if you are interested in becoming an Adoption Counselor.

Clerical Volunteers

Insurance researcher - Rattie Ratz is in the process of trying to obtain insurance for the rescue. We need a volunteer that can work independently from the comfort of their own home to find us affordable insurance. Ideally, the insurance should be specializing in animal rescues or non-profit organizations.

Cage Inventory Manager - Rattie Ratz has many cages in various locations. We need someone to keep track of all the cages that are Rattie Ratz property. Cages will be assigned an ID number and cage condition level. The Cage Inventory Manager will make sure that foster homes or storage homes give them pictures of the cages, and dimensions (if it's an unknown brand or non-standard size). All data will be pooled with the Cage Inventory Manager, so when a home needs a cage, we will know where it is located and if it's in use or not.

Grant Writer/Researcher - With the growing expenses of running a rescue, Rattie Ratz is looking outward to find additional funds. We need this volunteer must be comfortable working independently and gather data that may require research to find. This position will work directly under the Treasurer of Rattie Ratz. This position may also include looking how to get living trusts connected to Rattie Ratz.

Outreach Volunteer

Help spread the word at various fairs and other public events. Contact shelters to inform them of top-notch supplies, care, and more.

Marketing - Create posters or other advertisements to let adopters know we are here. Design brochures, educational hand-outs and more.

Transport Volunteer

This position includes driving rats to meet up with other volunteers. A transport volunteer must be willing to house a rat up to a few nights if the next leg of the transport can't be arranged immediately. Ideally, a transport volunteer is not also a foster home, so it will not reset the home's quarantine before an Adoption Fair. This volunteer may be called upon often OR infrequently, depending on your location. Rattie Ratz desperately needs transport volunteers!

Humane Education Volunteer

This area is ideal for independent workers who LOVE children! Make classroom or library presentations, assist with animal camp, and help at other educational events. Providing education, especially to children, is part of our fundamental mission. Getting it right the first time is MUCH easier that having to correct misinformation! (curriculum provided)

Animal Therapy Volunteer - Bring your personal rats to places that request animal therapy. Your rats must be mellow, take treats gently, are friendly, and tolerate regular nail trimmings (important right before a therapy date!). You may visit places such as Senior Centers, Children's Hospitals, or Assisted Living Housing. This position requires you to provide your own transportation to various locations.

Crafting Volunteer

We are looking for volunteers that can make hammocks for foster homes and for sale at our Adoption Fairs.
What you need to do:
  • Have a sewing machine
  • Contact Diane ( Diane@RattieRatz.com ) with your mailing address
  • Diane will ship you materials
  • You pay postage to get them back to us ... OR
  • Drop the sewn hammocks at the Sunnyvale Adoption Fair
