Celebrating Ten Years of Rescue
2008 marked our 10-year anniversary and, for 10 years, Rattie Ratz has strived to improve the lives of small animals and their guardians by promoting value and respect for all animal life. Over the past decade, our volunteers have been dedicated to the hundreds of rats and other small animals that have come through our organization looking for a second chance. Many of these rats come to us through no fault of their own and are, often times, the result of unwanted pet store purchase pregnancies – meaning that the animal was, unknowingly, purchased from a pet store already pregnant. Quite a few of our rescue residents are former pets who were surrendered to local humane societies when their initial guardians had to rehome them. Occasionally, rats come to us through a cruelty confiscation where the guardian is charged with animal abuse, neglect, or endangerment or another traumatizing event such as domestic abuse or natural disaster.
Unfortunately, due to the stereotypical revulsion that many people have towards wild rats, domestic pet rats are often misunderstood and mistreated and finding responsible homes for these animals is often a challenge. Volunteers have worked hard to place as many needy rats into loving homes as possible and we are pleased to say that our efforts are beginning to have an impact! Adoptions are on the rise as word spreads about rat rescue and the adoption option. Our organization is working hard to promote rats as valuable companions and we are excited to see that negative attitudes and perceptions towards these wonderful creatures are improving.
Despite recent improvements in the general perception of domestic pet rats, there is still a wealth of inaccurate information and negative attitudes are still being witnessed on a regular basis. Our volunteers are steadfastly dedicated to our goals of advocating rat adoption and promoting proper care and maintenance and we will all continue to work hard to achieve these goals and improve the general perception towards domestic pet rats for years to come.
